Can healthy gums bleed?

Can healthy gums bleed? The simple answer to this question is yes, but what are some reasons for this to happen? Many make the assumption that because their gums are bleeding there must be something seriously wrong. This assumption is wrong there are many different causes for this occurrence. For instance, some may not know that the bleeding could be an indication of inflammation. Inflammation is a pretty common problem within the human body so this does not make your bleeding gums abnormal. Of course one cause of the bleeding could be an infection, in this case you should consult your Dentist.

As previously mentioned inflammation is one of the most common causes. Inflammation is actually a very unique process. Whenever your body is injured blood flow is increased to that specific area and this is what causes the swelling effect. This influx in blood actually brings antibodies to protect against the toxins that are trying to enter your body. Your gums might be doing the same thing and should not be something to worry about. Think about this way, your gums are engaging in what can be described as a defense mechanism brought on by your body. Your body is trying to make sure no unwanted substance is able to get in.

Another plausible explanation is perhaps you are in fact hurting your gums. Your gums are made up of soft tissue and it is important to remember this tissue is very sensitive. Since they are so sensitive the way you're flossing could potentially temporarily damage your gums. For instance, if you happen to floss a little to close to the soft tissue you could cause irritation and this is a reasonable cause for gum bleeding. The most important thing to remember when flossing is to be careful. You need to take it slow so you do not damage your gums in anyway.

So can healthy gums bleed? The answer is it is not uncommon for healthy gums to bleed. There is no need to freak out without knowing all of the facts. If you are really that worried you should contact your Dentist, but the most important thing to remember is to floss and brush carefully.
